AI Search in October 2026: Five Changes Exporters Should Know

Google is showing AI summaries for more brand searches, changing how it measures AI traffic and updating its content guidance. Here are five reported changes from September and October 2026, and what an exporter can do about each.

01Brand searches may now show an AI summary

Position Digital's October news roundup reports that Google is showing AI Overviews for many branded queries. In one test it cites, 93% of the tested brands had an AI Overview appear. This is a report of one test, not a rule for every brand.

What to do: search your own company name and your main product names. Read what the AI summary says. If it is wrong or missing, fix the facts on your website, LinkedIn and directories first, because these are the sources buyers and AI systems read.

02Google rewrote parts of its "helpful content" guidance

Google made large updates to its Creating helpful content documentation, adding sections on content effort, originality and accuracy.

What to do: check your product and blog pages against those three words. Do they show real effort, such as test data, photos and specifications? Are they original, and not copied from a supplier sheet? Are the numbers correct?

03Gemini referrals will be easier to measure

Google added UTM parameters to outgoing links so site owners can better attribute referral traffic from Gemini.

What to do: after the change reaches your site, open your analytics source and medium report and look for Gemini traffic. Record it monthly, so you can see whether AI search is starting to send visitors.

04Search Console adds reporting for image and visual searches

In September, Google launched web multimodal performance reporting in Search Console. It covers searches made with Lens, Circle to Search, image uploads and Chrome's "Search this image".

What to do: for exporters this makes product photos more important. Use clear, original images with descriptive file names and alt text, and show the product from several angles.

05Microsoft Clarity adds AI visibility settings

Microsoft Clarity now lets users add, edit and remove the terms it uses to classify branded queries in its AI Visibility dashboard.

What to do: if you use Clarity, add your brand name, product names and common misspellings so the dashboard reflects how buyers actually search for you.

06What this means overall

None of these changes needs a new strategy. They all point in the same direction: accurate, original pages with clear company and product details, and consistent information across the web. That is also what we cover in our [guide to GEO](/blog/what-is-geo/).
