Google's September 2026 Spam Update Is Complete: What Exporters Should Check

Google's September 2026 spam update rolled out for about two weeks and finished on October 8. Here is what is confirmed, and what exporters with new websites should check.
In this article
01What happened
Google started the September 2026 spam update on September 24 and said it applied globally and to all languages. The Google Search Status Dashboard states that the rollout was complete as of October 8, 2026. Google's own ranking update history lists it at 13 days and 16 hours.
Google had said the rollout could take up to two weeks. It used almost all of that time, which is longer than the earlier spam updates this year. Search Engine Journal lists March at about 19 hours, June at just over 2 days and August at about 2 days 16 hours.
02What has not been said
Google has not published what this update specifically targeted. Its documentation describes spam updates in general terms: improvements to automated spam-detection systems. Anyone who claims to know the exact trigger is guessing.
03What this means for exporters
For a business with a new website, the practical lesson is simple. Spam updates reward sites that follow Google's spam policies and do not punish a clean site for being new. A short checklist is enough:
- Open Google Search Console and compare impressions and clicks before and after October 8. A drop that lasts several days and shows in Search Console is more meaningful than a brief dip on a third-party rank tracker.
- Review Google's spam policies against your own pages. Look for thin pages, copied text, machine-translated pages with no editing, and links you paid for.
- Do not rewrite your site in a panic. If a decline appears, make real improvements and expect recovery to take time. Google's systems may need months to recognize them.
- Keep publishing original pages written for buyers: product details, certifications, delivery terms and case studies.
04Other items from this month
Search Engine Roundtable's October report also covers a few changes worth knowing about:
- Google released Gemini 3.8 Flash in AI Mode, which first appeared without links and citations. Google later fixed this.
- Google is testing payments to publishers for the use of their content in AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini, through an AI contribution report in Search Console. The report describes the payments as small.
- In the US ad tech case, the judge ruled that Google will not be broken up and must make behavioral changes under oversight.
For exporters, the AI changes are a reminder that buyers now see AI answers as well as blue links. Clear, factual pages that name your products, standards and company details accurately are more likely to be cited. We cover this in our [guide to GEO](/blog/what-is-geo/).
