Does llms.txt Help AI Search Citations? What Google Says

Does llms.txt help your site get cited by AI search? Google says its own Search does not use the file, so it will not change your Google rankings or AI Overviews visibility. Publishing one is optional and harmless, but it should come after crawlable pages, clear product content and consistent public evidence.

01What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a plain Markdown file placed at the root of a website (for example /llms.txt). It gives AI agents a short, curated guide to the site: who you are, and which pages matter most.
The proposal, published at llmstxt.org and credited to Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI (September 2024), says the file complements robots.txt and sitemaps rather than replacing them. The only required element is an H1 with the site name. A short blockquote summary and H2 sections with lists of links follow.

Google's AI optimization guide in Search Central (last updated 2026-07-10) states that "Google Search itself doesn't use them." It says you do not need llms.txt or similar AI files to appear in Search, and that creating them will neither harm nor help your visibility or rankings in Google Search.
The same guide says there is "no special schema.org markup you need to add", and "no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI to better understand it."
This matches an earlier statement. In June 2025 John Mueller of Google wrote on Bluesky that no AI system currently uses llms.txt, and that LLM chatbots fetch regular web pages but not the llms.txt file (as reported by Search Engine Roundtable).
03Why do some Google tools still mention it?
Chrome's Lighthouse documentation for its agentic browsing audits describes llms.txt as a machine-readable summary for LLMs and AI agents. The audit is "not applicable" when the file returns a 404, "as providing the file is optional at the moment". A server error when retrieving the file is flagged.
These two positions do not contradict each other. Search says the file is unnecessary for Search. Lighthouse checks whether browser agents can understand a site. Neither says the file raises rankings or citations.
04What matters more than llms.txt for AI citations?
Google's guide points to fundamentals. Our reading for an exporter site:
| Priority | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Keep important pages crawlable and indexable | AI and search features can only use pages they can reach |
| 2 | Publish non-commodity content: specifications, test data, factory photos, case studies | Google asks for helpful, first-hand content |
| 3 | Make company facts consistent across your website, LinkedIn and directories | Gives buyers and machines the same story |
| 4 | Use structured data where it supports rich results | Google still recommends it for eligibility, not AI-specific gains |
| 5 | Optionally add llms.txt | Low cost, no documented Google benefit |
For a manufacturer targeting Russia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and the US, the bigger risk is thin or machine-translated product pages, not a missing text file. See our guide on GEO and AI-search visibility and how hreflang keeps language versions clear.
05Should an exporter publish llms.txt anyway?
A reasonable rule: publish it only if it takes under an hour and you will keep it accurate.
- List 10-20 pages that define your business: products, certifications, markets, contact.
- Write one factual summary sentence. No superlatives.
- Link only to pages that return 200 and are indexable.
- Update it when products or markets change, and review it quarterly.
Some third-party AI tools or agents may read the file in the future. We have no documented evidence of this for Google, and we do not claim any ranking or citation gain.
06Frequently asked questions
Will llms.txt improve my Google rankings?
No, according to Google's own guidance. Google says it neither helps nor harms visibility in Google Search.
Does ChatGPT or Perplexity read llms.txt?
We did not find an official statement from OpenAI or Perplexity confirming that they use it, so we make no claim either way.
Can llms.txt cause SEO problems?
Google says creating it is harmless. Just make sure it returns a normal 200 response, because Lighthouse flags server errors on that URL.
